WHAT IS SHIKAKAI?
The name comes from Tamil: "Shika" (hair) + "Kai" (fruit) literally "fruit for hair."
Its pods contain natural saponins, soap molecules that clean without stripping your scalp's protective oils.
Archaeological evidence shows shikakai was used for hair care as early as 2500 BC.
Unlike synthetic surfactants (SLS, SLES, SCI), shikakai's saponins are non-ionic. They lift dirt and excess oil while leaving beneficial oils intact.
This means no "strip and overcompensate" cycle and no transition period.
HOW TO USE
Wet hair thoroughly.
Rub the bar directly on your scalp, or lather between your hands first.
Massage into scalp and hair. Rinse thoroughly.
Finish with our hikakai rinse or apple cider vinegar mixed with water.
It will leave your hair super soft and silky.
No conditioner needed for most hair types.
If you have very long or dry ends, use a small amount of conditioner on ends only.
Pro tip: Let your scalp adjust for 2-3 washes. Some people notice a difference immediately; others need a few washes for their scalp to stop overproducing oil.

WHAT IS THE PH?
Yes, it's alkaline. On purpose.
Real soap is alkaline. Ours sits around pH 8. That isn't a flaw. It's what saponification produces, and it's what soap has been for 4,500 years.
Every shampoo bar advertising "pH balanced 5.5" is a synthetic detergent bar. You cannot make real soap at 5.5. That is exactly why they use SCI.
We would rather make real soap and hand you the full original ayurvedic ritual than fake the pH with a lab surfactant.
That's what the hibiscus rinse does: closes the cuticle, restores the acid mantle, finishes the ritual.
You can also use an ACV rinse.
WHY NO CONDITIONER?
You won't need a conditioner.
Most conditioners exist to fix damage caused by harsh shampoos. They coat your hair with silicones to make it feel smooth, but don't actually repair anything.
Shikakai doesn't strip your hair's natural oils, so there's nothing to "fix." Most people find they don't need conditioner at all.
If you have very long or dry ends, use a small amount on ends only.
IMPORTANT: It's important to finish your Hikakai ritual with an ACV rinse or hibiscus water to lower the alkaline state of your hair and leave it smooth and silky.

Yes!! It are all edible ingredients and it's perfect to nourish your skin as well.
How long does each bar last?
Around 1-3 months with regular use (2-3 washes per week). It depends on hair length and how much you lather. Most customers find one bar lasts longer than 2 bottles of liquid shampoo.

Is there a transition period?
No. Transition periods happen when your scalp needs to recalibrate after years of being stripped by synthetic surfactants. Shikakai doesn't strip, so there's nothing to recalibrate. Most people notice a difference on the first wash.
How is this different from other natural shampoo bars?
Most "natural" shampoo bars still contain synthetic surfactants like SCI (Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate) or SLS. They're gentler than drugstore shampoo, but they're still detergents. Our bar contains zero synthetic surfactants. The cleaning comes entirely from shikakai's natural saponins.
Does it dye my hair?
No. Shikakai does not contain any dye or bleaching agents. It cleans your hair without altering its color.
Will this work with hard water?
Yes. Hot saponification creates true soap that rinses clean in any water type. Synthetic detergent bars (even "natural" ones) often leave waxy buildup in hard water, shikakai doesn't.
